happy birthday mom!
in no particular order, because i don't do this kind of thing nearly enough, ten things i love about my mom:
1. she appreciates treats. we'll just be hanging around the house and she'll look at me and say, "i want something good to eat." add ten minutes to that statement and she's scurrying around the kitchen looking for a recipe. add fifteen minutes and my dad is running to the store for ingredients. add another hour and a half and we've got something delicious to eat.
2. she's a doer. peggy doesn't sit around talking about stuff. almost before an idea hits her brain, she's acting on it. she sews and scrapbooks, quilts, bakes, organizes and reorganizes, cleans, gardens, reads....and don't even get me started on her packing skills. peggy's industrious. she's a mover(but maybe not a shaker). peggy gets in there and gets things done.
3. irrational and uncontrollable fits of laughter. you just never know when they'll strike her. she'll get all red in the face, teary eyed and out of breath for no other reason than the driver of the tram has announced that the next stop is bambi, followed by timon, daffy duck, and pluto.
4. the baby knowledge. she's got it. she ran the part of pomerado hospital that has everything to do with mothers and babies for like 15 years or something. like she RAN that section and all the nurses and all that. i never appreciated that until i got one of them babies of my own.
5. she loves target....and wal-mart. before she went to nauvoo, she could be found there EVERY morning buying something new or returning something from the day before.
6. she's taught me about how to relate with females. seriously. i have no sisters. i get confused sometimes. she's taught me that everyone doesn't have to be a perfect friend; that all friends have value, you just have to hone in on what that value is sometimes. gosh, this isn't sounding nice....i guess the cliched version of what i'm saying is she's taught me how to look for the good in people.
6. she loves animals. she has proclaimed our dog, lucky a "celestial" dog.
7. she's a people reader. it might be a sickness. my mother will have a ten minute conversation with a friend i've known for years and proceed to reveal truths about them i'd never noticed, which truths i at first i dismiss, but eventually must admit to myself are valid. she listens to what you say, but she's also noticing how and why you're saying it. she's perceptive as all get-out. luckily she uses this power for good and not evil.
8. she checks my blog. like, every day. and i think it's because she really wants to.
9. some may find this one a little creepy, and that's okay. better to discover i'm a weirdo sooner than later. for as long as i can remember, my mom has always done this thing where, if you're sitting by her, she'll put a hand on your arm or your foot or your shoulder and she'll ever-so-softly give you a little rub. like, i don't even think she realizes she's doing it. and you might not notice either...you're just overcome with this general sense of well being....and you're like...yeah, life is alright. do all mom's have that power?
hope you're having a great day mom. give those temple-goers hell!
Happy birthday Peggy! Since I am only the vicarious sister of Sara I have always secretly claimed you as my second Mom. I'm not sure if you will think that is good or bad since I am now wondering if my idiosyncrasies really do show up after talking to me for 10 minutes. Yikes! I thought I could totally fake being rational and normal. :). If I could add a number 11 to that list it would be this: Peggy is mother earth- practical and businesslike yet homey and mothering who always looks beautiful and calm but can be a mother grizzly when protecting her very loved children. She always had the best food at her house and the softest socks. Did I really say that? Yes I loved how soft saras socks were. Plus she raised a pretty amazing daughter!
ReplyDeleteMAN! My comment didn't save. Happy Birthday Mrs. Orr Take II!
ReplyDeleteI would like to say that your mother is also hands down one of the nicest people on the planet...and not just nice to be nice but genuinely nice, she cares. And yes I agree about the calming effect she has she exudes peace. And lastly I completely agree that she is a people reader.
Happy Birthday, I hope it's great and I'm very glad I get to know you and your wonderful (did I say that out-loud) daughter!
I think your mom is pretty special, also. She is always so geniune and aware of what others need to hear. Great moms like this are hard to find :) Happy Birthday Sis. Orr!
ReplyDeleteIt goes without saying that I am wildly crying. How I love you dear daughter...you have made my birthday so special! Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts! I couldn't wish for a better present.
ReplyDeleteRach, I'll wash your socks any day. You have always been there for Sara, solid and supportive. Jackie, you too. I love you both. Sara is fortunate to have 2 such wonderful friends....sisters in her life. You're right, she is one treasure of a daughter.
